Taking Hygiene Services to Communities Across Australia

Orange Sky is well known for its mobile laundry and shower services, supporting people experiencing homelessness and hardship. As the organisation continues to expand its valuable services across regional and urban Australia, they have enlisted Bella Manufacturing to design and build several new mobile laundry units that provide more capacity, more workspace for volunteers, and improved operational efficiency.

The project needed to balance hygiene standards, workflow and safety, and reliability in diverse environments, all within the footprint of a small cab-chassis truck.

From Concept to Design

Bella’s team began with a custom aluminium tray and insulated canopy mounted to a cab-chassis. Three large lift-up doors form the core of the design, opening to a full-length operational workspace with stainless steel benchtops, storage and access to the washing equipment. This format provides significantly more room for volunteers compared to van-based units, while also creating clear zones for handling soiled and clean laundry.

Building a High-Duty Mobile Laundry Fitout

Each unit has three washing machines and three dryers fitted, along with diesel heater systems, ducting, clean and waste water plumbing, detergent pumps and purpose-built storage. Power autonomy was an important part of the brief, so the unit was integrated with an inverter, lithium battery system, solar array and RedVision monitoring.

LED lighting throughout the workspace and external lighting at each corner enables safe night operation. A full vehicle wrap completes the build, creating a professional, visible and community-facing unit consistent with Orange Sky’s national brand.

Deploying a Reliable Laundry Service

The completed Mobile Laundry Trucks allow Orange Sky to deploy quickly in public spaces and community hubs, operate in the evenings, and support a higher capacity of washing services. Volunteers benefit from plenty of internal room and an efficient workflow, while the onboard systems support operations in areas without constant mains power.
