Different Types Of Food Trailers
When people are doing their research into buying a food truck or other mobile catering vehicle, we often end up discussing comparison quotes and what the difference is between them. This is the information we like to share during those discussions.

There are broadly three types of trailers in Australia:

1. Imported – Pre-made and pre-built overseas then imported

2. Factory kits – built as a kit overseas then imported to be assembled in Australia

3. Made in Australia – built from the tyres up by Australian manufacturers

Whilst we understand everyone has a budget, the old refrain that it’s cheaper to buy from the best is a truism for a reason. When the people we talk to are sitting firmly in the imported market budget, we recommend doing homework on supplier warranties, spare parts, and service. These are typically the biggest areas of concern for this budget range so it’s important to find out what sort of after-sales service and support is available. Too often we see owners left adrift when their vehicle or equipment breaks down or needs maintenance and repair.

The second type of trailer, the factory kit, tend to be a lighter duty trailer. The kit items are built overseas then imported and assembled by the retailer once here. Typically, these trailers need to have improvements made to them to bring them up to Australian codes and standards, so it is worth asking questions about what has had to be done to the trailer to ensure it will pass permit inspections. Once this information has been shared, buyers are able to make informed decisions about quality and on-going maintenance and repair.

The third type – those made in Australia – are limited to two or three suppliers in the country. Australian manufacturers typically endure higher labour costs than imported options and use higher quality components, so the vehicles are built to be workhorses. Having knowledge of the reliability and robustness required to navigate Australian roads and to pass local codes makes for a better quality product. Australian-built truck & trailers tend to be ultra-reliable and inspire confidence in the buyer. In addition, long-term manufacturers will have nation-wide warranties, after sales support and service and local technicians able to assist with any questions or equipment requests.

As with all purchases, what you get for your money differs according to price points. It is worthwhile spending the time to compare the end product at both ends of the budget spectrum to make an informed decision for the future of your business.
